Report: satellite systems of the anti-theft protection
19 August 2010

Year by year the overall number of stolen vehicles in Poland has been decreasing. In 1999 204 cars were stolen every day, after 10 years this number dropped to an average of 47 cars daily. This tendency is due to the more and more advanced protection systems. Among these systems satellite anti-theft protection systems are regarded as the most effective method of vehicle protection.

The number of stolen vehicles in Poland has been constantly decreasing. In year 1999 more than 74 thousand vehicles were stolen, in year 2009 this number amounted only to 17 thousand. The overall value of lost vehicles in year 2009 surpassed PLN 500 million with the average value of a stolen car of PLN 30 thousand. In 2009 the Chief Police Headquarters retrieved 23,3% stolen vehicles, their value amounted to almost PLN 40 million. The car models that were most frequently stolen last year were successively: Volkswagen Passat (1770), Volkswagen Golf (1318), Audi A4 (555), Audi A6 (494), Fiat 126p (377), Skoda Octavia (320), Toyota Corolla (320). It is important to note that in 2009 also 130 buses and 48 rail vehicles were lost. Apart from thefts in 2009 also 24 746 incidents of breaking into passenger cars were registered. In almost 90% of cases cars were stolen from the streets and parking lots. Several dozens less of thefts were registered near the commercial centres, garages and terrains near the free-standing houses and buildings, or petrol stations. Regions where most cars were stolen are: mazowieckie, śląskie, wielkopolskie, łódzkie, dolnośląskie.

How to protect your vehicle?
The most effective anti-theft solutions are the specialised electronic devices. A lot of drivers choose the typically mechanic methods as various blockades. The efficacy of such solutions is very low as for example it is enough to cut the steering wheel to remove the blocade.

All protection devices offered on the Polish market must have a certificate issued by the Industrial Motorisation Institute (PIMOT). The Institute specialists have prepared the adequate criteria to assess the protection devices and the Institute issues efficiency certificates honoured by the producers and insurance companies. The certificates are dedicated for a defined type of a device installed in a particular car model. PIMOT divided the devices into four efficiency classes: popular, standard, professional and special (Extra).
The devices of the satellite vehicle monitoring belong to the upper class and their efficacy is the highest on the market. The leader in this type of protection for some years has been AutoGuard. The Company at the end of 2009 monitored 22 610 vehicles, mainly fleet cargo transportation vehicles and passenger cars. Last year AutoGuard received 177 thousand alarm communicates, 103 of them were transferred to the Police and Intervention Groups. The results are astounding because out from 22 stolen cars, 19 worth together PLN 2 million were found. The drivers appreciate more and more this type of protection and the number of AutoGuard clients constantly increases. The additional advantage are considerable discounts on insurance packages for vehicles equipped with the GPS system. For example:
WARTA - 50% discount
ALLIANZ - 20% discount
HESTIA - 20% discount
PZU - from 10% discount

,,The GPS devices are no longer an expensive gadget, and they have become a basic tool in car fleet companies. The economic crisis accelerated this process and fleet administrators more willingly make use of functions offered by the GPS car management systems. That is why we may expect that in Poland in year 2010 the number of vehicles equipped with the monitoring and fleet management systems will increase to 171 thousand and the value of this market will exceed PLN 200 million." - said Mr Włodzimierz Potapczuk, Director of AutoGuard SA. Commercial Department

The anti-theft protection based on the GPS technology requires installation in a car of a special device which thanks to its small dimensions can be located in any place in a vehicle. It is connected to a few lines of a system that blocks a car for example an immobilizer, a panic button. The device can be connected to a factory-made or a non factory-made alarm installed in a car. There is also a possibility of installing several sensors: percussive, ultrasonic and other. Each breach of one of the blocking lines will cause sending of an alarm signal to the Monitoring Centre. A communicate contains very precise information on an alarm type, vehicle location with precision of 5-15 metres, speed and direction. Each alarm starts appropriate procedures including immobilizing of a vehicle (only when it does not create danger for other road users).
